Interrupted fern occurs in upland deciduous forests and coniferous forests on moist, slightly acidic soil, and also in lowland hardwood forests, and forested swamps on raised hummocks (where soil is not saturated). It does well on moist sand or sandy loam. It is a large fern, but not aggressive.
